Healthy Spider Lily Flower Plants Tips and Care

Healthy spider lily flower plants with white big blooms look very welcoming and attractive. I love the big sized blooms that grow in bunches and the heavenly fragrance that can be felt from far. The spider lily plants were grown because of the famous white flowers used in garlands and marriage decorations. but I came to know that they require very little care and are among one of the easiest growing flowering plants.

Spider Lily Plant with Fresh White Blooms
These bulbous spider lily plants once grown take root very fast and spread very fast. So our spider lily plants bulb has taken over the whole container and I have also divided the bulbs into other container as I love the thick foliage of big leaves of the spider lily plant. the spider lily plants leaves are elongated and large in size, very good feng shui plant with big leaves. As in feng shui bigger leaves indicate big money and good for wealth luck when planted in the north or north west section of your home or garden.
Pure Fragrant Spider lily Flowers
Tips for growing healthy spider lily plants in containers- The spider lily plants are grown best when they are root bound. The bulbs then multiply very fast so if you wish to keep them smaller grow them in smaller pots only. If you wish the spider lily plants grow thicker and fuller select large pots so that the spider lily bulbs  multiply fast. The plants are very easy growing and require much less care and water. Each spider lily plant develops stems, a large thick stem which develops many buds on the single stem. The flowers are fragrant and large in size.

Healthy Spider lily Plant Tips
An important tip for growing healthy spider lily is to allow the dried flowering stems after flowering to dry on the plant itself. Many times when all the flowers have boomed we tend to cut of the stem before drying and this harms the natural process of the spider lily plant. let the stem dry off and fall naturally to keep your spider lily bulb healthy an give many blooms.

  5. hi Anonymous,
As for England temperatures I am sure flowering bulbs grow quiet well in spring. what exactly do you mean by went over, is growing many side bulb babies, because the flowering stem usually has many blooms on single stem,or have the leaves dried out, bulbs usually do not die soon, but just to make sure see whether the soil is not clogged as then the mushy bulb would disintegrate inside the pot, this definitely gives a rotten smell, , have lost a few bulbs because of my "wait and watch"
Your bulb I think is going in rest mode, like the red canna we have this gives flowering stem and then the whole plant dries off producing new leaves from base. to bring out another stem of flowers!
All the Best! waiting to hear from you..

  6. I have what you we in South Africa call the brown 'Christmas beetle'. They come out about November, flourish in December and then disappear in January. Very annoying beetles because they eat alot of leaves and flower heads.
They have eaten alot of my spider lilly flowers so the impression doesn't last long... even after spraying them with an insecticide.....
With global warming and the temperature changes, the beetles are flourishing that much more. They come out at night and return to the ground in the early morning.

    1. Oh that's sad Duane Cusens, even most of my blooms of other plants are feasted by sparrows and pigeons. These beetles feed voraciously,
Some plants just cant be grown, is what I have learned, so I have just let them go, like the petunias,

  9. Mid May 2016 and my 3 outdoor container bulbs have only just broken thru. the surface after planting 23 months ago. Here in this part of Essex we have very warm, micro climate temps. all year.

  10. Hello Sophie, 23 months a long time ,waiting..but bulbs act wierd.Yes sunlight is essential for bulbs to grow. But that's great that they have come up, maybe rains will bring that growth spurt, like some of my bulbs do. You could shift the containers if possible to a more sunnier spot.
Maybe the bulb is resting in case the previous season it has given lots of blooms, is what I have noticed. Hope your plants spring to health soon, All the Best from Rizwana!

    1. Hi , Spider lily is grown from bulbs. If the bulb is complete then it will grow into a new plant. No bulbs are grown straight into pots, and they don't like large pots, grow in smaller pots so they bloom faster. hope this helps!

    2. Hello, have just found your site by chance. I grew Spider Lily last year for the 1st time. I was thrilled with the result. Beautiful flowers and fragrance and lasted for some time. I re-potted for spring, leaving on the strappy leaves. I then left them in my porch over winter, I wasn't sure if they had survived so gently checked the bulbs and was delighted to see new shoots. I gave just a trace of water (not sure if I did the right thing). I am not much of a gardener. So fingers crossed !
