The Money Plant and Making a Moss Stick at Home

The Money Plant
This plant has been grown from ages, My childhood we had these money plants grown in glass bottles which were displayed on all window sills. They required very less care and grew only in water. Whenever this plant was grown in soil it had profuse growth and would cling to any nearby plant or wall and cover up the area. There was also the belief that growing this plant gives lots of money to the grower and people would steal leaves and stems of this plant in order to grow these money plants.
I had this plant over the years and gown in mud the plant roots clinged to the wall and grew very large. Leave aside the money part I did get scared of the profuse and thick growth of this fast growing climber or creeper. There were feelings as if the money plant was alive. yes, when you closely observe the huge plant creeper growing you will understand it has strong genes of survival. But only in some homes does this money plant grow. The leaves also grow very large sometimes if it is growing with the support of a big tree or near a continuous water source.

Now according to feng shui this plant was earlier considered a no no, as it indicated that the person growing this will flourish only when they get support of some one and people will always be dependent on support from others. By this belief many people threw away these beautiful plants and some people still avoid growing this money plant.
Leaving aside these beliefs now even in feng shui a growing plant is considered auspicious especially since this plant requires less care and flourishes in any environment, so will your business flourish without much effort.
Money plant has got its name since the leaves of this plant are similar to coins or money and this is best grown when it is planted in containers. I have grown this in water as the mud one grew out of control! The leaves of money plant are of light green, dark green or some times shaded green in colour. It can grow in any shaded area or even indoors. The new leaves come out from the tip of the creeper. Trimming side shoots will give you single long growth or cutting from the tip will encourage side growth to give a more fuller plant.

There are also moss sticks available in the market to guide this plant in the pot. One can also make a moss stick at home using rough rags and plastic stick or rod. Having a strong rod , cover this using a twine made of jute or cotton thread. Use cotton rags and avoid synthetic materials for making this moss stick to encourage growth. Plant this stick deep into the pot and then plant the money plant inside. It would be good to tie the plant to the rod at the base. As the plant takes root, and believe me this is a very fast growing creeper, the plant will send roots and hold on to the moss stick. Remember to spray water over the complete moss stick made at home. keeping the rags stick moist will promote healthy and  fast growth of your money plant ,and so will your wealth! Enchanting Garden Reiki paintings on sale for prosperity.
According to feng shui upward growing plants are very good for getting profits in business, and especially this money plant is used to promote money luck in the house or office. These plants do not require much care that does not mean that it will grow anyway. There are people who have tried growing this from cuttings and have not succeeded.
Tips for growing money plant at home:- Watering in potted plants is similar to any other plant. Avoid direct sunlight as this money plant will not grow in areas having direct sunlight for whole day.
When starting a new plant from cuttings, first grow it in water. Let the roots develop and then transplant it in pot containing soil for better growth. Please do not allow this plant to grow on your home wall as the roots growth will weaken your walls making cracks which will lead to leakages during rainy season. (Please do not throw away these beautiful plants whatever your beliefs are, grow them in upward directions if need be,  it really may give you money luck!)
Control its growth to enjoy its beauty. The Money Plant has been from ages and is definitely a plant to stay for many.
The best part is that money plant is grown as an air purifier plant and also best for office table and activating good feng shuii. Post- Natural pest control and air purifier plant.

  2. Hi Bhakti,
    Thanks for stopping by.

money plant can be planted indoors in water and it grows quite well in any glass, ceramic or plastic container. If you wish to plant it in soil try to keep it near the window or where it receives some indirect light.

  4. Hi Shell,
    Thanks for the comment.
The money plant is very easy to grow, only one thing to rememebr is it needs high moisture levels.dampness promotes healthy growth. You have not mentioned whether your money plant is in water or soil.
You can try to plant the single stem of money plant in curved way in your container, this way most part of the money plant stem is in contact with moisture and soil.
At least I have tried and successfully grown the money palnt this way, you will have to put some light weight stone on the stem for it to remain in contact with the soil and within few days many roots will emerge (do not let the pot dry, maintain high moisture levels) from your single stem and after thick growth you can plant the different stems of money plant in different container pots or bottles of water. All the best and do let me know.

  6. Hi,
I have grown a money plant in soil.
I would like to ask if using a strong thread as a climbing support for this plant will work. Like tie the end of the stem of the plant to a thread and then tie the other end of that thread to the ceiling.
    Will there be any problem?

    Thanks

  7. Hi Bhavik,
yes if your money plant is in soil and a large pot with sufficient nutrition then it will definately climb the thick rope. But since it will not get additional nutrition like from thick moss stick to hold its extra aerial roots , it will grow in single line . All the best.

    1. Hi Ranjit, no its simple if you observe, look for the section where the roots are visible from the long money plant stem, that's the right place to put in water and make the money grow.
Here just above or below keeping some stem you may make the cut and dip the money plant in water so that the roots get nourishment immediately, all the best!

  11. HI. I have a marble money plant plant in a pot with moss stick. It's about a year old but grows very slowly and does not have very thick foliage. Do I need to fertilize it regulary. Also it has been kept inside the house where it's bright but does not get direct sunlight (dhoop)

    1. Hi Smita, seems your money plant is not happy, otherwise it grows like wild!
you may try giving it some trip outdoors, some indirect sunlight early morning or evening, maybe a window trip also would be fine, plants also feel bored, even our indoor plants take few trips outside to get the fresh pure light.
As for fertilizing I have not done this but you may try using some manure, the important part here is the plant gets nourishment from the moss stick ,wetness ,moisture level is essential, drying out of soil will not encourage growth, moss stick which may not be a good quality one.but I feel sunlight will do the trick. try it, all the best

  13. i saw little worms swimming in my money plant vase. they look like leech with legs.. i grow the plant indoor(office) and with water. i tried to reduce the water and use plant jelly but that doens't help. anyone know how to get rid of these little worms..

    1. I am so sorry i missed your query, anonymous, keep washing the water of the money plant frequently to avoid worms. that will suffice.
Maintain clean water and the worms in water are indication of neglect in cleaning stagnant water, or just adding water from top without cleaning the container, of the money plants, not very good feng shui for your office!

    Plz tell me home remedy.

  15. hello anonymous, money plant grows well in damp and wet soil. keep humidity levels high and give strong support, it will blossom faster.
As far as adding anything I have to be frank never added anything till date, not even any fertilser which is for flowering plants, only one point is do not allow the soil to go dry.try growing in water first, once the roots come up you may plant money plant in soil.
The very large ones I have seen cling to building walls or huge trees for support, really huge money plants!
    All the Best!

  16. Hi I have planted my money plant with the stem only in soil and there are no leaves on it. Do you think it will grow with leaves later???

    1. I have been cutting any part of plant that looses leaves and putting it back in soil, and it always grows, though it does take a while to get leaves on it but i have successfully done it several times. not sure about the time frame though .... i keep it in shaded area outdoor and if it rains, i see leaves sooner. so, yes it should grow later.

    2. Oh that's Awesum then that your money plant is taking well to your soil, rich with nutrients.Yes once it adapts to the soil and conditions, money plant grows like wild!

  17. hello anonymous, if the plant gets enough moisture it may bring out new leaves, but as far as I know some small part of leaves is essential to make food for the plant, photosynthesis.
But in water it may start off sooner with new roots.once roots are formed it is easy to adjust in soil.Hope this helps.
    All the Best!

  18. Hi Rizwana!
I have a small money plant cutting kept in water. It has developed nice white roots but I don't think it has grown in length or sprouted a new leaf in almost 2 months since I got it. Does it actually happen slowly or is there some other concern?

    1. Hi Kavya, usually money plant grows like wild, but it needs good environment. In water it may take longer, in soil it grows fast. 1) You can choose a little sunnier place, move it and see, I am sure it will pick up growth fast.2) For water grown money plant I add pebbles, tiny. Stones. so that the roots get some firm ground. This has shown me good results. All the Best from Rizwana!
