Gardenia is also a name it is known, in India this plant is called as Ghanda raj, ghanda-fragrance and raj- king, the king of fragrances.
The Anant plant was a common fragrant plant a few years back but now it has become extinct and rare. The Anant plant looks almost similar to the custard apple plant and the leaves are similar in shape and size. the plant has to be trimmed regularly if you need to maintain the Anant plant in shape of a bush. the Anant will grow into a full fledged tree and you will know if an Anant is growing in your vicinity due to their heavenly fragrance which travels for quite a distance especially during warm summer days and cool evenings.
The flower like the Rajni Gandha and the Mogra will be at its best from evenings and night and their fragrance is at its peak in the evening.

The Anant plant does not requrie much care except for fertilizing according to normal flowering plants. Watering can also be skipped and the plant can tolerate direct sunlight. The Anant plant grown in container requires regular trimming to keep the bush in shape and also to encourage flowering in the Anant plant.
The more the trimming of the anant plant, the more the plant is encouraged to bloom soon. The plant grows on its own and does not require any special care. And the blooms are a treat to all your senses. A combination of beauty and fragrance is seen in the anant flowers.
What is the English name, is it gardenia? Do you know its name in other Indian languages? Is it offered in temples? Is it made into flower garlands for temples? Is it special to any particular deity?
ReplyDeleteIs it known as gandharaj, gandharaja pushpam?
Hello, welcome to gardening simplified, yes it is as far as I know called gardenia. Yes it is also the one you have mentioned, Gandharaj.
DeleteThe plant has such beautiful fragrant white flowers, looking almost like rose.
A reader's mom had also mentioned that this plant is a foreign plant and was called" cup and saucer" plant.
I am not sure, about which deity loves this, but people do offer this to God in temples if available and I have seen many people pluck flowers in the early morning to offer at their personal Temples.
Why it is becoming rare? What happened?
ReplyDeleteThe Anant plant was a common fragrant plant a few years back but now it has become extinct and rare
I am not sure why, this beautiful plant is not seen. I till date have only seen it twice as trees, but the people pluck the blooms even when they spot a single one, so sad.
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons I feel is the heavy construction work in this concrete jungle everywhere, the debris and cement has been known to kill much greenery around.
Neither anyone is bothered to prevent the extinction by growing new ones from cuttings.
Hello, I have an Anant plant. It has lots of buds but they do not bloom. The buds are a very nice healthy green color, but thats it. Even when they fall off they remain green for a long time. What should I do?
ReplyDeleteHi..It takes time to bloom. I waited eagerly for almost a month. Just have patience and it will bloom on its own!
DeleteYou may need to make the soil little acidic. May be use lemon juice . Read about it on Wikipedia
DeleteAdd potassium rich fertilizer like for organic- banana peels.
DeleteHello anonymous, so sad that the blooms of anant fall off, this is a very beautiful fragrant flower,
ReplyDelete1) One reason may be less watering.
2) check out for any pests and insects that eat buds.
3)Is the plant in proper sized container?small containers do not allow the plant to grow healthy and even if they bloom the flowers are not healthy.
4) Try trimming the plant and do not allow many buds to grow at a time. Few buds will give proper noursihment .
5) Did you add too much fertiliser?
hope this helps.
All the Best!

ReplyDeletei have a potted ananta, the leaves are yellowish and the new ones turn brown. can u plz tell me what to do.
ReplyDeleteHello Anonymous, Anant plant in winter may drop leaves and turn brown. Just check the plant stem is firm and not weak or mushy.
ReplyDeleteAre the new leaves turning brown, maybe too much or too little sunlight exposure, or you may have added too much fertilizer, prior to winter and the plant goes in shock.
Even our plant Anant going through the same as winter has set in, but new leaves will soon come , hoping for the best!
Do not skip watering now , regular watering required as the plant soil covering the container dries up even if it is not very sunnny outside. And if possible change place of the pot.
Hope this helps!

Dear Rizwana, I live in Basel Switzerland and by chance i found anant plant in market here. I brought it home in August this year and now it is getting cold in winter. I am a bit worried about my plant. This plant has lot of emotional value for me as it connects me with my dad. I realized that I had watered it too much in the beginning and the soil that i can buy here is not the best. Now I water it once a week that too from the bottom of the container otherwise the surface of the soil remains too moist and grows mould. leaves are falling off sometimes even while they are green and that makes me worried. Is it due to winter? but on the other hand it is also producing a lot of new leaves and many many buds.. the problem is the buds are also falling off young... we do not have much sunlight these days, so i have the pot next to the window and the room heater.. please suggest what i could do to take good care of my precious plant.. thank you in advance and best regards.
ReplyDeleteHello , Its a Beautiful day, I have answered your query in email, hope this helps! www.razarts.com

Garden Care Simplified Welcomes You Preeti !
ReplyDeleteAnant plant has been found to behave like this in many places. Even my plant is showing a slow growth, which once had given many blooms. The main trick I think is "trimming regularly" but with the little growth you can't do this, and adding fertilizer and proper watering. And the right place- correct measure of sunlight and shade. So I keep shifting it to see where it will become happy and bless me with blooms!

ReplyDeleteHello, I stay in Mumbai. I have an Anant plant. It has lots of buds but they do not bloom. The buds are a very nice healthy green color, but thats it. Even when they fall off they remain green for a long time. This has happened twice. What should be the reason ? Is there any solution to this problem?
ReplyDeleteReply
Hello Anonymous, lucky you are seeing Anant buds, its rare that the plant gives out blooms without care, it may be that the plant is giving out too many small buds and cannot focus energy on blooming.
ReplyDeleteThis time try trimming the thin lanky stems and let the plant grow thick.
This may also be due to too much fertilizer added, give a through wash and use diluted fertilizer.
Hope this helps!

Hello.!! I'm new to gardening and I just brought 2 plants 1.) night blooming jasmine (Raat rani) 2.) gardenia (anant) so both are good choice?? And I just planted them 1 day ago and few leafs of night blooming got yellowish so did I do something wrong, there are many small buds in it. Kindly reply soon thank for your time spare
ReplyDeleteHello Smith, the leaf drop is a part of wintering session, climatic effects and adjustment to new environment effects. Still keep a check on the plants, they need a little more sun. If the main stem is green and producing new fresh lime green leaves then it is ok, if not then change place of the containers.
DeleteIt may also be due too less or more watering.
All the Best from Rizwana!
Thank you so much for the reply. Main stem is not lime green but it's green and brownish wood like texture and new leafs are sprouting but not growing do this plant takes long time to grow? Do it blooms in winter, here winter started and they get sunlight well. Thank you
ReplyDeleteSmith the woody stem indicates that the plant is strong. Maybe its showing signs of winter setting in.
DeleteSame had happened with my Ananat plant and was producing small sized leaves, it had over grown in its pot and when I dug it there were too many large roots and no space to grow. And then also happens when plants do not take to well to the new highly acidic soil.
Yes they blooms after a long time, as I have seen, But since you have just planted it you will have to give it some time!
Additional information the above description was for ananta plant I'm really waiting for them to bloom but couldn't find any buds or anything just new leafs on the end of the branches and I have problem with betel leaf it's getting softer and seems like dead I tried growing them but I can't I have added cow manure for fertilizer and they get sunlight properly so please guide me for this plant also thank you :)

ReplyDeleteBetel leaf is a climber,Vine, needs good support, needs well draining soil but loves more water. And it also loves a partially shaded area, with indirect sunlight.
DeleteSoft leaves means either more watering or less watering.Check the soil, is it clogged so roots may not be getting water or maybe it is getting too much water, Hope this helps!
Thank you so much. Betel leafs seems fine but very sensitive plant :) any ways. Please help me for gardenia plant they don't have any buds nothing. Only new leafs that's it :) and one more thing do lily of the valley grows good in india (mumbai)?
DeleteSmith, gardenias will take their time, you can trim them, as this helps a lot in flowering. Add cowdung/feeding before winter sets in and hope to see some blooms!
DeleteAll the Best from Rizwana!
Oh yes Smith Lillie's do grow well but they love to be root bound and in full sunlight , we do have some that have take well to our space! Cloggy soil and dark corners must be avoided.
DeleteHope this helps!
Agree to thsi Smith Betel leaf is a sensitive climber and ours is almost many times feasted upon by sparrows! so we have shared it to another home, at least the plant will not be facing trauma again and again!
DeleteHello. How should I trim gardenia. And it's hard to find "lillies of the valley" here I have been searching from really long time. This plants are amazing but don't know where to find them :(
ReplyDeleteSmith, Trim them four to five inches from top, choose lanky stems. Lillies of the valleys have so Awesum flowers, I usually buy rare plants from Plant exhibitions where there are stalls from different places around the Country. So some rare ones add up to my extended family!
DeleteHi rizawan, where can i buy flowering plants which are rare in Mumbai
DeleteessPaar, main areas in Mumbai have great nurseries, I stay at Thane the one at Godbunder Road is large and even near Sheel Phata, nearing Kalyan, Andheri, Tata nursery, and the one near Powai lake, but best ones are in Pune outskirts.and I usually buy rare plants from any nursery or plant exhibitions.
DeleteThanks rizwan. I will check out the places as mentioned
ReplyDeleteHello. I bought gardenia plant recently. It was very healthy. Recently I observed ants going inside the bud. Also some green color insect and white material I observed around the bud. Leaves are becoming yellow. What to do in this regard. I want to see atleast once blooming of that bud. Thank u
ReplyDeleteHi Chanchal, Yes of course, the blooms are Awesum! sorry about this, your plant is attacked by white aphids, ants eat these , hence you see ants near the bud, they will eat the bud and only the shell remains. What I do- 1) trim some infected parts, 2) water, thoroughly, bathe it, manually scrub( wear gloves)bathe it, this will remove most of the pests 3) try to put in a sunny spot, it will recover fast. The Gardenia's bloom after many years, think it has to do with climate conditions. Hope this helps! All the Best from Rizwana!
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteIt would be great help if you can guide me. My Gardenia buds are falling. I have got lot of buds but none of them are blooming. Please suggest. Really feeling sad. I have kept in my open terrace yes there are direct continues rain for last 2weejs. Is it because of too much natural watering ?
Hi Parmeshwar, that is sad...people wait to see the flowers of Anant as the fragrance is Awesum. Yes too much winds also may be the reason, but usually it is too many weak buds at a time, too much green growth.I usually trim them to a few healthy buds. Thin stems drop buds. Try trimming the plant it will give out healthy buds and flowers. All the Best from Rizwana!
DeleteThanks Rizwana,
DeleteThe plant size is too small to be trimmed. It is kept in a small poy. I have got 20buds of which 7has fallen off. I could see 2 off them are showing some sign of blooming. You still suggest that I trim them or remove the bigger leaves.
Parmeshwar, no, please, not healthy buds, you can identify weak looking brownish buds and trim those stems so that the other can get more strength. As they are full you let this phase go and when the process of blooming is over trim them.At least my experience is that they give good flowers with regular trimming. All the Best from Rizwana! Enjoy the blooms, their fragrance is so heavenly, out of this world !!!
DeleteThanks. Will try this and tech out to you again if I need any further inputs.
ReplyDeleteHi Rizwana,
ReplyDeleteIt's almost a 10 days now not a single buds have bloomed. There is no progress on a contrary I found lot of big white worms in pot. Though I removed them bit not sure if there are few more. I am worried whether they will further damage the plant. Please suggest how do protect them. It is been continuously raining since last one week and the plant is out in my terrace. Is it because of too much water due to rain and there is no sun light for last 10 days ...is this a cause of warms ? Can I use some pesticides ? I am worried that I may loose this plant
Hello all , unfortunately my small anant plant in container had white fungus on the plant and all 5 buds got plucked off, can some one tell me how to take care from the white fungus ?Had seen the white fungus @ the junction of the bud
ReplyDeleteHarshad, oh so sad...trim the tips of more fungus, give the plant a thorough wash, bathing with spray of water. choose a mild sunnier spot, so the plant picks up fast.
