Ever Green Plant/ The Flowering Sada Phuli/ Periwinkle Plant not Flowering?

The Pink Flowers of Periwinkle Plant

Periwinkle plants are seen from ages and they are available in many colours with white to pink and shaded variety. These periwinkle or sada phuli plants have been since ages and were seen growing without much care. The pink variety is the most common and toughest of all the vinca rose plants.

We had grown pink, red, maroon, white shaded with magenta and of course the one in the photograph is the deep magenta colour that looks very attractive from far away also and is the focal point in the garden. How to save diseased Periwinkle watch this short informative video on my You Tube Channel the Red Pilgrim.
The sada phuli plants do not require any special care and the best part is they can grow in full sunlight and bloom profusely. The whole vinca rose plant is always laden with flowers hence people often term it as sada bahar or sada phuli, which means in hindi to be every green and always flowering. the name itself sparks joy!

Sada Phuli Everygreen peri winkle care and tips for flowering- Though the plant looks an easy grower and we often see the plants growing even in nooks and corners of walls and on the ground where the seeds may have been transferred by wind, the plant when grown in containers does need some care to always be in bloom. I had a friend who had this plant that would not bloom ever! Few tips for flowering of the sada phuli if your plant is stubborn and does not give any blooms!!!, sunlight, full direct sunlight for at least some part of the day. Water carefully when the plant is grown in plastic container as the roots will rot if the water is not drained properly.

Trim the flowering ends when the blooms have fallen to encourage more blooms and healthy growth. This has worked wonders for my peri winkle plants. It would be best to keep trimming after few months when the plant grows into any direction to give it proper shape and encourage healthy growth. Trimming brings healthy strong plant stems and encourages flowering.  You can also add few balls of fertilizer available at your local nursery if your plant is not giving any blooms, though this a  rare case! We actually had the no flowering type hence the post came up because I thought it was acting weird and maybe the sada phuli too has infertile species!
See that it receives some hours of sunlight. Otherwise it is difficult to see healthy blooms. the vinca rose may start buds but they drop with very less light. Even the flowers do not completely open up in low light environment.
Do not over water your plant as the mud will become soggy and the plant will not take root. Touch your plant and see whether the plant has rooted well, in most cases the plant comes out loose and hence the dull looking growth and no blooms. The plant will take care of itself by multiplying by its own seeds and you will see many small sada phuli plants coming out from all directions and all neighboring pots.
In case all efforts for making the plant bloom seem futile maybe the plant is non fertile, just get another one! sometimes they too are infertile!

  3. Hello Smita , welcome to my garden care simplified!
Yes periwinkle acts strange with many people!
Actually well draining soil, plus regular watering is required. Only when the roots gets established does it grow otherwise it shows droopy leaves in half day and even when you water it does not spring back.
Important practical tips I can suggest with experience, 1) when you buy periwinkle buy ready potted plant.2) Buy a larger plant instead of buying single stem plant with only one flower. Periwinkle saplings survive better when there are two to three stems with more flowers. 3) Try re potting in other pot, plastic container, it does well as this retains water. 4) Check for black ants and black dots on plant or insect eating. 5) Buy pink colored ones , they are strongest and survive on own, the other colored ones have weak genes.
    Hope this helps !

  5. Hi,

Every time I buy a periwinkle sapling, it's flowers reduces in size. The plant stays for 6-8 months and then dies. What should I do?

  6. Hi Anonymous sad your plant is not putting up! periwinkle dies, but if properly cared it grows for years. trim the shoots that grow so that they bring out thick stems, then the blooms will be big in size. Add used tea leaves, this works!

  8. Hi. I bought a pink sadabahar plant day before and potted it yesterday.. It has only a single stem and 2 flowers. Even though I watered it, during the afternoon because of excess heat the leaves became droopy.. Plz help and give some tips.

  9. Hi Anonymous, so sad that the plant did not take too well to the new space. Try putting the plant for few hours in water only and once it become firm , you can plant it in well draining soil.
Usually I try to plant it a bit deeper so that the new one gets support.
It does behave erratic some times and I too have lost a few precious periwinkles!
You can also try watering twice but in less amounts till the plant adjusts, hope you save this ...All the Best from Rizwana!

    1. Hello , aap ke plant to sunlight ki zaroorat hai. The black spots are pests or larvae, that attack the plant.
Check whether the soil is clogged, so the roots are not getting enough water.
Usually bright sunlight helps the plant to get a growth spurt. Hope this helps!

    1. Tahera, periwinkle bloom well, trim the stems, add some fertilizer. Has the plant flowered once at least, if not, sometimes there are some plants that are barren and never flower.
      Hoping for the Best!

    2. Tahera, You can also plant another flowering periwinke beside this or in other pot. this also helps to trigger flowering.

    1. Hello Apurva the flowers might have seen their day, yes afetr few days they do fall, but the best part of periwiinkle sada bahar is they give out profuse blooms. Meanwhile check for black ants,, they are most dangerous for this one.,Hope this helps, All the Best from Rizwana!

    3. Hi Rizwana, No problem with the misspelt name. As guided by you i checked for the black ants and dint find any. However a even disastrous finding that i have had since the last time i checked on these new kids of mine was:

      1. The sadabahar have completely dried up not even budding.

      2. The soil remains very moist the entire day PS i only water it in the morning.

      3. I have a dahlia whose flower is dead now and i have performed a deadheading on it. Please advice me what to do on this.

      4. I am very concerned about all the plants please help me out with a solution. Is there something wrong that i am doing.
      Please advice.

  14. Hello Apurv, 1) peri winkle sometimes acts weird!my previous plants were so fats multiplying that I had to throw so many off them as they took over all containers of the garden. But the dark pink ones are strongest than other colors. No this happens, you will just have to buy another one,its the genes of the plant, and not what we do many times. 2) soil is moist means not enough sunlight and not well draining soil, add few pieces of bricks or smalls tones this helps to prevent clogging. 3) Dahlias are seasonal love full sunlight, prone to ants and fungus, water carefully. 4) Dont worry, Just take care of them, we can at most keep checking and its also known fact that the more we are tensed the more our plants are affected calm,All the Best from Rizwana!

  15. Hi.i have dark pink sadaphuli plant which was growing very well since i bought it. But unfortunately from last two weeks the leaves have turned yellow and the plant has some white powdey patches all over the stem. Its not growing any longer. I guess it died.though i can see very few buds.

  16. Pallavi, yes white powdery mildew, usually winter season, see if the main stem is green, then you can save it. What I do- 1) trim the plant, every stem little bit,2) remove all yellow leaves 3) wash thoroughly, let water drain so roots become active.4) Also water carefully, avoid over watering. 5) try to change place, a little sunnier spot. Hope this helps!

  17. Hi Rizwana,

I have bought a dark pink periwinkle two weeks back. Its blooming well. I have kept it in a place where it can get full sunlight. However every morning all its leaves become droopy. Only after 10-11 am the leaves become normal. Any idea what could be the reason?

    1. NK, the plant roots are not getting enough water. Either the soil has got cloggy or the process of watering is not proper. Usually I repot such plants, with fresh mixed soil, but this is a tricky process as root balls are delicate.I also had issues with many coloured periwinkle s, this plant once rooted is great, but the new plants have to get proper soil to get rooted.Water carefully everyday without skipping slowly from sides of pot.Hope this helps! 18. Hello my pink sada bahar plant is not flowering. Instead of keeping the plant in sunlight and watering daily and the soil is well draining. Please help me what should I have to do to make my plants flower bloom ??

    1. Hi Unknown, is it seasonal, see if the main stem is green, and no signs of Root fungus or white aphids. ,did it flower before? Or is this a new plant bought from plant nursery? What I do- 1) trim the plant,2)Add some feeding, fertilizer, water soluble, water carefully, avoid over watering.3) give it a bath to wash off any pests 4) try to change place, sometimes this works to begin flowering 5) If all does not work then maybe the plant is infertile, 😢 6) plant new one in the same container, this also has helped to induce flowering in sada phuli. Hope this helps!
